The Colorado Mount Sneffels Wilderness area is one of Colorado’s most beautiful mountain ranges. Next to Aspen’s Maroon Bells, Mount Sneffels is arguably Colorado’s most recognizable mountain. Sneffels has also been featured as scenic backdrop in popular westerns, including “How the West was Won,” and most famously, in “True Grit,” with beautiful vistas from Dallas Divide.
Sneffels is notably Colorado’s best and most beautiful mountain. When viewed from Dallas Divide, Mount Sneffels looks like a substantial “mountain” with beautiful slopes of aspens and flowers. Many visitors are are inspired by the beauty of this stunning mountain. Mt Sneffels is known by many locals as the “Queen of the San Juans.”

Getting There
Mount Sneffels is the tallest summit in the Sneffels Range. The prominent 14,158-foot “fourteener” is located in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness of Uncompahgre National Forest. Its 6.7 miles west by south (bearing 256°) of the City of Ouray in Ouray County, Colorado, United States.
There are a few routes to the area. By car its a little less than a 6 hour drive from Denver to Ridgway or Ouray, Colorado (the closest town). You can also fly to Grand Junction and drive about 2 hours 25 minutes to Mt Sneffels. You can access the Yankee Boy Basin area via County Road 361 (look for the Yankee Boy Basin signs). Another route to the area is via Colorado Highway 62 (Road towards Telluride) to the East Dallas Creek National Forest access.
