First Light at Dream Lake Rocky Mountain National Park

These photos are from early Fall during a very light snow. The photo depicts the classic view of Dream Lake as morning’s first light illuminates the tops of Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain. We were very foturnate to capture this image as there were snow flurries which briefly yielded to the alpenglow, giving us a window of light lasting only 5-7 minutes.

Autumn in Rocky Mountain National Park can be unpredictable. Even with the best maps and forecasting the weather can surprise you, so come prepared for anything. RMNP in the Fall provides beautiful clear sunrises as well as snowy mornings and everything in between. Gear Used to Photograph First Light at Dream Lake Rocky Mountain National Park

The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Dream Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park:

• a Nikon D810,
• the Nikkor 24-70mm, f/2.8,
• a Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod (GT2530),
• with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR Ballhead,

The 7:30am morning exposures for the first light Dream Lake photos averaged between 2.5 seconds and 30 seconds at f/16. We used the Nikon D810’s native ISO of of 64. The Dream Lake images were taken with the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Some of these images were created by combining 5 exposures at one full stop apart in Adobe Lightroom. This HDR process was done in order to capture the high dynamic range of the early morning light. We also chose 3 images and selectively blended them together using Layers and Luminosity Masks in Photoshop (Light, Medium & Dark). We then imported the resulting Tiff file and finished processing it with Adobe Lightroom.
