Lake of Glass Photos Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado
Lake of Glass Photos Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado. These images were captured on a 9 mile photography trip up to Sky Pond. Lake of Glass and Sky Pond is located at around 11,000 feet on a high shelf above Loch Vale. The expansive views of the mountains and valleys below is quite breathtaking in all directions. This is one of the areas of Rocky Mountain National Park that truly has an otherworldly appearance. The hike up to Lake of Glass and Sky Pond requires your to climb up the side of Timberline Falls. The heavy run-off made the climb up the falls quite slippery and challenging, especially in the dark. The smoke and haze of distant wildfires filtering through the colorful sunrise can be seen in the valley below. These photos of the Lake of Glass were taken on August 1, 2018 between 5:42am and 6:18am.

Lake of Glass Motion Graphic Video – Rocky Mountain National Park
This video animation of the Lake of Glass was created using special software. This motion graphic software utilizes a still photograph and creates animated vectors within the image file. The resulting video file is called a Plotagraph. This is similar to a Cinemagraph but uses one still image vs. using native video footage to create the final result.
Gear Used to Photograph Lake of Glass below Sky Pond
The following camera gear was used in the Landscape Photography of the Lake of Glass in Rocky Mountain National Park:
- a Nikon D850 with a Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
- F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
- a Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod (GT2530),
- with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR Ballhead,
- and a Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8 lens.
Due to the more strenuous nature of this hike we had to minimize the gear carried on this trip to only 2 lenses and one camera body (with accessories). The photo to the right was taken just as we arrived and the pre-dawn light began to illuminate the scene. These photos were all taken on the Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod. The D850 exposures for the images averaged between 13 seconds to 1/20 of a second at f/11. We used the D850’s native ISO of 64. A few of the photos were created using HDR exposure blending in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. Luminar’s AI feature was used to add an extra pop to one of the images.
