About the P-51D Mustang & P-51C Aircraft
The CAF Red Tail Squadron restored and flies this rare P-51C model Mustang fighter to create interest in the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, who flew many P-51s just like it this one during WWII. The Mustang first flew in October 1940 and went into service in July 1942 with the RAF and later in 1942 with the U.S. Army Air Force. The Mustang served with distinction well into the 1960’s with the Dominican Republic, flying them in active service until 1984!
The “February” P-51D Mustang is painted with the distinctive red stripes of the 31st Fighter Group, 15th AF from WWII. “February” was flown by the highly decorated pilot Lt. Jim Brooks of the 307th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group in WWII. In the present day, it is owned and operated by the Friedkin family warbird collection (Comanche Fighters LLC) in Houston, Texas.
The P51-D Stang Evil was built in July 1945, and was one of the last 200 D-Models produced. After the war, it saw service with the Colorado Air National Guard in the 120th Fighter Squadron at Buckley Field in 1949, and with the 140th Fighter-Bomber Wing in 1950. It is now based at the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, Jefferson County, Colorado. It is painted in the colors of the 335th Fighter Squadron flying out of Debden, England in 1944.
