Independence Pass, Marble, Leadville, Aspen Colorado Photos: Located below please view the gallery of photos of Independence Pass, Marble, Leadville & Aspen Colorado. Our photographic journey started in Marble Colorado in Gunnison County off County Road 3. We then headed to Aspen Colorado for a few photos and stopped for lunch. From Aspen we ventured onto Highway 82 and found ourselves at Independence Pass in Lake County Colorado. The elevation of Independence Pass is over 12,000 feet above sea level. At this elevation you need to be careful about exerting yourself too much as the air is very thin. From Independence Pass, you have sweeping vistas of the main ridge of the Sawatch Range, Mount Elbert, and the Continental Divide. The pass is midway between Aspen and Twin Lakes, on the border between Pitkin and Lake counties. Once we captured a few photos of the pass we then headed toward Leadville where we captured the images of Twin Lakes and the old school house off Highway 24. The photos on this page were taken on September 1, 2014 (in late summer, just before the fall colors arrived).
