Photos of Bachelor Group of Bull Elk Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado. After completing our sunrise photos from the West Side of RMNP we made our way back up along Trail Ridge Road. As we approached Milner Pass and Poudre Lake we spotted a Bachelor Group of Bull Elk. Bull Elk often gather like this before the rutting season. Still slightly overcast and cool temperatures kept these Bull Elk fairly active. This was mid July and rutting season happens from September till October. During rutting season the Bull Elk vie for the hearts of their female counterparts, known as cows..At this time you can hear a chorus of bull Elk bugling. This loud call is the sound of a bull trying to attract and keep an eye on as many cows as possible. These images were taken on July 14th in 2019 around 7:29am to 8:15am.

Gear Used to Photograph Bachelor Group of Bull Elk in Rocky Mountain National Park

The following camera gear was used in the Wildlife Photography of the Bachelor Group of Bull Elk during rutting season in Rocky Mountain National Park:

• a Nikon D850 with MD18 Battery Grip and Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
• F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
• the Nikon 200-500mm, f/5-6,
• and the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III.

The 7:30-8:15am morning exposures for the Bull Elk photos averaged between 1/250 second and 1/2000 of a second at f/5.6 to f/8 with an ISO of 640 to 1600.

We used the Nikon D850’s Aperture Priority Mode. The focal length used to capture the images averaged between 250mm and 700mm.The Elk were very active this morning so the images on this page were captured off the tripod and all taken hand held.
