Photos of Bierstadt Lake Rocky Mountain National Park
Photos of Bierstadt Lake Rocky Mountain National Park. These photographs are the result of a pre-dawn hike made in late spring. Halfway up the trailhead we ran into a few mule deer grazing on the moraine in the morning darkness. Their glowing eyes were reflected in our headlamps as we made our way up the steep trail set against the dark outline of the mountains along the Continental Divide. The weather fully cooperated this day giving us beautiful skies set against a backdrop of wispy white clouds with spring snow still visible on the peaks. These exceptional spring conditions and calm winds allowed us to capture spectacular views of Bierstadt Lake with crystal clear mountain reflections. These photos of Bierstadt Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park were taken between 5:24am and 6:20am on June 3, 2018.

Gear Used to Photograph Bierstadt Lake at RMNP
The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Bierstadt Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park:
- a Nikon D850 with MB-D18 Battery Grip & Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
- F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
- a Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod (GT2530),
- with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR Ballhead,
- the Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8,
- and a Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 lens.
These late spring photos were all taken on the Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod. The D850 exposures for the images averaged between 1/3 of a second to 1/125 of a second at f/9 and f/11. We used the D850’s native ISO of 64. Some of these images were created by combining several exposures at one full stop apart in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC. This HDR process was done in order to capture the high dynamic range of the scene. We also created the wide panoramic landscape photos in Adobe Lightroom by blending 9-11 separate photos together. This process generated DNG RAW files that are over 24,000 pixels wide. Some of these images used a similar process to create a vertical panoramic photo from 3 exposures.
