Photos of Cub Lake Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado
Photos of Cub Lake Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado. These landscape photographs were taken on a beautiful early Summer morning. We started on the trailhead well before dawn and hiked approximately 3 miles to our destination. Cub Lake is at an elevation of about 8640 feet. The trail to Cub Lake is abundant in wildlife and is known for Elk, Deer, Black Bear and home to a few Mountain Lion. We even caught a bull Moose grazing in the grasses on the far side of the lake. If you look closely in the photos you can see him wading through the lily pads. The weather provided us with beautiful skies set against a backdrop of stunning mountain views. These photos of Cub Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park were taken between 5:28am and 7:02am on July 11, 2018.

More about the lake: On your way up to the lake you may spot wildlife near the Beaver Ponds located on the left side of the trail. The relatively calm winds on this day allowed us to capture spectacular views of Cub Lake with reflections of Stones Peak amongst the flowering lily pads. You may notice some of the trees along the nearby hillside charred by the Fern Lake Fire. During the fall of 2012 the Fern Lake Fire burned 3500 acres in the Cub Lake area. Known as largest wildfire in Rocky Mountain National Park history. Please click on a photo located below for a larger view:
Gear Used to Photograph Cub Lake at RMNP
The following camera gear was used in the Colorado Landscape Photography of Cub Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park:
- a Nikon D850 with MB-D18 Battery Grip & Really Right Stuff L-Bracket,
- F-Stop Gear Aloe Green Tilopa 50L Back Pack (with large Pro ICU),
- a Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod (GT2530),
- with a Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR Ballhead,
- the Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8,
- and a Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 lens.
These late spring photos were all taken on the Gitzo CF6X Mountaineer 2 tripod. The D850 exposures for the images averaged between 1/4 of a second to 1/80 of a second at f/8 and f/11. We used the D850’s native ISO of 64. Some of these images were created by blending two images together Adobe Photoshop CC. This process was done in order to capture the high dynamic range of the scene and enhance the skies. The close ups of the Lilly Pond flower photos were taken with the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 lens.
