Located Near the Old Barn: Waterton Canyon Trail

Waterton Canyon serves as trailhead for the 473-mile-long Colorado Trail, offering sampling of the beauty and grandeur of the high country. The scenic canyon, the rumbling Platte and the wide, flat road draws the outdoorsy in large but comfortable numbers to the area. Since the canyon serves as trailhead for a monstrously long walk to Durango, you can hike as far as you please. Segment 1 is unique in that it starts with a 6.2-mile trek on a dirt service road owned by Denver Water. The road is mostly flat and very popular with cyclists. The beginning of the Colorado Trail is the Waterton Canyon Trail segment adjacent to Chatfield State Park on Waterton Rd. This section of the famous trail is very popular due to its proximity to Denver and easy access to the trailhead. This immensely popular route follows the South Platte River as it winds west into the mountains.
