Photos of Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse in Colorado
Photos of Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse in Colorado. Coloradans were treated to very clear skies for the viewing of a rare and dramatic total lunar eclipse Sunday night.
The full moon rose on the evening of Sunday, January 20th as a wolf moon, or a perigee moon, when its orbit comes closest to the Earth. It was the first full moon of the year. The reason why it appears larger than normal is because it is approximately 6 percent closer (approx. 222,000 miles closer) and about 14 percent brighter.
The eclipse began at 8:33 p.m. MST when the Earth’s dark inner shadow (between moon and the sun) could be seen on the eastern edge of the moon. By 9:41 p.m., it was fully eclipsed.
Why is it called a Super Blood Wolf Moon?
When the moon passes behind the Earth during a lunar eclipse, it turns red, giving it the name blood moon.
This red color occurs because when the sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere it is reddened and refracted back toward the dark surface of the eclipsed moon.
The Super Blood Wolf Moon photos on this page were taken on January 20, 2019 between 9:13pm and 9:58pm. The late evening temperatures hovered around 27 to 25 Degrees Fahrenheit (-4 Celsius) on this crystal clear Winter night.
